You cannot, I repeat, you CANNOT be so close to Ontario/Canada and not visit the great Falls.
Here's how close we were and the story of how we almost missed it.
I remember when we were in Detroit. There's a certain stereotype about it, so we were a little panicked, that we'd either get robbed or die. But there was one thing, that kept us positive all the time; visiting the Niagara Falls. We knew we just had to experience this awe-inspiring natural world wonder.
We were at the border with Canada. The officers were looking really suspicious at both of us. Our documents for the load were incorrect so we had to stay there, trapped in between borders, for a couple of hours before we could leave. We were getting pissed. At last, after countless phone calls, we managed to continue our way to deliver the goods.
We finally arrived at our destination, and the closer we got, the more it started to rain. Ahh, and the rain! I was outside for just 10 minutes to unload and I immediately was soaking wet.
I will never forget our time in the parking lot just listening to the rain hitting the roof of the van while we slept dreaming of the stars. Our plan was settled. We were to visit Niagara Falls the next day! I was so tired that I fell asleep almost immediately. Ela? She was restless, thinking of what could go wrong... what could sabotage our dream to dive into the Falls. She knew something was gonna happen. She always senses when something's wrong.
And it did indeed. After we woke up, my phone screen was completely filled with messages. Apparently, my boss aka my uncle accepted a load, without asking any questions. Boy, I was pissed. Boy, Ela was even more pissed at me for not standing up for ourselves. I messed up. As time passed by, tension grew in between us. We were closer than ever but so distant, worse than strangers. I felt lost and didn't know how to fix it.
We eventually drove at night to at least take a peak at the Falls. We didn't see much of the Falls, but that sound, was scary, frightening actually. For some reason Ela loved it. In that moment all the sins in the world were forgiven when I saw her face. She was still pissed at me, but at least she had a smile on her face.
The next morning, we drove to pick up the pallet and waited... and waited... and waited... The load we had to take to Connecticut was delayed by 5 hours. As the hours passed by, tension grew even stronger. We could've visited the Falls four times by then. When we got the load, our deadline was very short, but we still decided to drive Back to the Great Falls. We felt hopeless with every parking lot denying us parking. I could see the pain in Ela's eyes, and the disappointment that reflected in mine. She almost cried. I almost yelled.
We asked the local 'Information hut' and they pointed the direction of the Boat that went on the sea. We ran so hard. I went ahead to stay in line to get tickets. The line was huuuuge. She didn't tell me, but I knew she lost hope. Luckily for me, she gave me the brightest ideas of them all. 'Solo, check online!' 2 minutes after she said that we were running down the stairs rushing to the boat with the tickets on our phones. Thank God that one of us could still think under pressure. Not only she is the beautiful one, but also the smart one.
We were there, with all the tourists, all of us wearing the 'one-use rain coats' getting ready to enter one of the great wonders of the world. I don't have enough words to express the feeling that our body and soul managed to inhale. It was truly one of the best experiences in my life. In that moment nothing else mattered. Not even our fight and tension.
I couldn't quite understand why I had such an amazing feeling on the boat. I thought it must have been from the spectacular view, and I was not wrong. Yes sure, the Falls looked quite amazing but without Ela in the sight, they were just noise surrounding my ears for about 30 minutes.
Many stories are about the destination, but even if indeed we are talking about the Great Niagara Falls, our trip was what made it worth it. No, I'm not talking about our USA trip, I'm talking about our trip going to the Falls, about the stress in the Canadian border, about the fights we had, about the make-ups and everything that lead to this particular trip.
Even so, without Ela, the Falls are just another hot spot to visit and take pictures. But with her, it felt like I've indeed crossed a place from my bucket list.
